There are two officially recognized subspecies of lions in the wild, the African lion and the Asiatic lion. The African lion is found on the continent of Africa south of the Sahara Desert and is our most common lion. The Asiatic lion, on the other hand, exists only in a small population in the Gir Forest National Park in western India, numbering between 350 and 400 individuals.
